The Thermo Scientific combined Source Range and Intermediate Range Channel provides neutron flux measurement from reactor shutdown to reactor full power level or from 10-2 nv to 1010 nv in a harsh environment. It is designed to measure neutron flux with the detector in a high gamma radiation and electrical noise environment. The system is designed to operate for 40 years under normal conditions and to survive a design basis event (DBE) providing reliable measurement before, during and after the DBE.
This fission chamber based neutron flux monitoring system has a 40-year qualified life and has been completely qualified for 1E Safety-Related applications and satisfies U.S. NRC Regulatory Guide 1.97 Post Accident Monitoring Requirements.
There are typically two identical Source / Intermediate Range channels in the nuclear power plant. The modularity of our system allows easy installation, quick troubleshooting and repair.
Each Source Range / Intermediate Range channel consists of:
- Wide range detector assembly (with integral cable)
- Junction box
- In-containment cable assembly (from junction box to inside penetration)
- Amplifier cable assembly (from outside penetration to amplifier)
- Amplifier assembly
- Optical isolator assembly
- Signal processor cables
- Source range signal processor
- Intermediate range signal processor
- Shut down margin monitor assembly
- Wall mount signal processor assembly
The signals from the wide range amplifier are connected to the rack mount signal processors. The signal processors are designed to replace existing Source Range and Intermediate Range drawers. The signal processors can be designed to look similar in appearance to existing equipment to minimize training of plant personnel and changes to plant operating procedures. The monitors convert the signals from the amplifiers into signals that represent the source range count rate, the intermediate range power level, and the rate-of-change of reactor power level, as well as provide adjustable alarms when the SR or IR levels exceed their set points. The Source Range and Intermediate Range signal processors are provided in 19 inch rack mounted enclosures with LCD digital and bar graph meters.
The system has been designed to maintain existing operator and Reactor Protection System interfaces and contains no high voltage, coaxial cable, or triaxial cable in the control room.
